Cole’s Navy Journey

Our son has made the decision that he is going to join the Navy.  This came as quite a shock to me.  Well maybe not shock but I have so many emotions going through me right now.  So I thought it might be a good idea to just blog about them.  I am thankful that he is 17 & hasn’t graduated from high school yet, so he won’t be going anywhere yet.  Having said that we have a lot to prepare for in the coming months/years.

Tuesday he went & talked to a recruiter.  He took a sample ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) & scored a 36.  For the Navy you need to score a 35, so he did good.  He recruiter wants to study for 2 weeks & take a sample test again to try & get a higher score.  Once his recruiter feels his score has improved he will send him to MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station).  The better score he gets on his ASVAB the more choices he gets on what job he trains for after Basic Training.  Once his is sent to MEPS he will test, get a physical & do most of the processing to enlist.  However, since he is only 17 & hasn’t graduated from High School yet.  From what I understand he will on DEP (Delayed Entry Program) which can last up to 2 years I believe.  Another thing I have learn though this process is there are a lot of acronym’s in the military.

Some of the jobs I think he is interested in are:

Intelligence Specialist

Aerographer’s Mate (Which is a weatherman for the Navy)

Law Enforcement & Security

Fire & Rescue

Submarine Electronics

Mechanical & Industrial Technology

Medical Support

Fight Operations

Flight Support

Two Jobs that are a little more difficult are:

Aviation Swimmer

Navy Diver

Once we get further into the process I will update again!!
Kristin (Future Navy Mom)
